How the f@#$ are you registered to vote…
…but you don’t possess a government issued ID of some type? How are you unable to acquire said ID yet you get to the polls every election? It is said there are up to 200k folks in South Carolina that fit this description.
It boggles my mind, especially having been in South Carolina a number of times. In fact I almost had to relocate there. This is an absolute joke.
ID for ALL voters everywhere!!!!!!!!

It all comes down to what forms of ID are allowed. Many of the elderly do not drive. They don’t have drivers licenses. What do they use?
Just as our justice system is based on innocent until proven guilty so that we risk a guilty man going free to ensure no innocent man is ever imprisoned, so it should be with voting. Better that ten people vote illegitimately then one valid voter be denied the right to vote.
Voting is the last weapon available to the average man in changing this country. The error must be on the side of preserving this right.
P.S. As an aside, when my family moved to Illinois it was surprising how difficult it was to document ourselves for car registration for example. “Utility bill with your address on it” — eeh no, we had just moved here and hadn’t gotten any bills yet. “Passport” — ehh no my wife does not have one. We did manage to find qualifying stuff because IL gave a number of options.
So long as every state is very liberal in what documentation they will accept as “proof” of identity, then I can agree with your post, Alfie. If not … then not.
Regressive vote theft is the motive…. pure and simple. – to solve a problem that does not exist.
There is only one reason to be against voter ID.
To cheat. Like Dawg’s mother did.
That pretty much sums it up, Tex – though I see little point in insulting Dawg’s mother in the course of it.
One thing on this topic that irks me to no end. the same folks that are against showing an ID for voting are exactly the same folks that eagerly embrace a national health ID card
Hmm… Let’s see. I need a Drivers license to work. Whether that’s a heavy truck like now, or as a Paramedic. I have / need a concealed carry permit to be able properly and effectively defend myself and others from the bad guys. I had to show my birth certificate (Lo those many years ago!) to get a social security card. I had to carry at all times my Selective Service Registration card, or go to jail. Now, I show any but the Draft Card, and I can vote.
So, let’s take apart some of the red herrings out there…
The elderly don’t drive: That is what state ID’s are for, and if you are indeed indigent they are free. That is also how they get approved for Social Security benefits and medicare.
Poor people cannot afford an I.D. card: Same as the elderly.
It’s a thinly disguised Poll Tax: Same as the elderly.
What if they lost their identification the day of the vote? You provide it at the time of registration, and you are on a voting list. Ask any polling Judge, and even if you are not listed, your vote will be taken, and then vetted later.
Just moved to the new district: Computers are wonderful things! Your registration is changed to your new address, and guess what? You get to vote. If there is a glitch, you still vote, and it gets counted once your status has been verified.
Now, why wouldn’t you be able to vote? Because you are actually dead? Because you lost your right to vote because you are a criminal, and haven’t had your rights restored? Perhaps you are passionate about a cause, and you already voted? Perhaps, just perhaps, you are not eligible to vote because you are not an American..?
America is not a mob rule democracy, it is a Constitutional Republic. Citizenship comes with a price. That price being responsibility and accountability. Obey the law, and you get all the neat things. Like the protections that are found within the Bill of Rights, and voting. Play stupid, and don’t register, or commit felonies, and guess what?
You do not get to vote, period.
I’m actually with Alfie and Patrick more or less. Keep in mind, I said that a VARIETY of options need to be made available. As long as every reasonable allowance is made to allow for identification, I have no problem with it.
Certain types of id are less likely to be carried by certain constituencies, who (coincidentally?) tend to vote Democrat. And no, I don’t mean dead people. As long as the id requirement is not overly restrictive, there is no reason for anyone to cry fowl about it.
P.S. In small communities the volunteers at the polls actually know many of the voters. Do any of you guys have an objection to these volunteers simply allowing folks they know are legit, to vote? Just asking.
No, I wouldn’t. I mean think about it. You go in and buy a firearm, and you show an ID correct? Not if the seller knows you, and that you are of good character. I’d have no problem with Joel, my neighbor and an Election Judge clearing someone known to him to vote. I’m also sure that he would shake their hand, just to make sure that they were not dead… (jk)
I for one don’t mind the small community effect and by virtue that I know what table to go to and what page I’m on in the roster lends credence I’m legit but I still show up able to ID myself.
I wanted to offer something I found interesting and related to both sides of the subject especially since it is based out of SC too.
There is a phenomena found in coastal SC that generations worth of blacks own land secondary to the freed slave legacy. Recently there have been cases where one obscure relative who can prove lineage has sold the land to developers who are obviously looking to build higher end property than any of the blacks can touch.
Well an interesting aspect to this all is how generations of family members never really own the land but more so use it. Whether residing in an actual stick built house or more often a trailer /mobile home they move back and forth, pass the housing onto other family members etc. all along for the most part respecting the concept of the “family” ownership responsibility. Case in point the taxes are obviously paid by somebody.
Anyway long story shortened with this dynamic one one should be able to concede that provable residency voting rights specific to the African American community has multiple angles to it on both sides of the argument.
