Very broad question. Ethical hacking is of course right since it is designed to protect the privacy of companies/entities.
I’d submit that hacking in all other instances is not right as it is the cyber equivalent of breaking and entering, which is illegal.
I can give you the regressive answer.
If it is to make false claims against climate scientists it is A-OK.
I assume they also approve of Murdoch’s phone hacking as well after all it was to sell regressive news rags.
If it is to expose the criminal acts of regressive fascists like dubby it’s all wrong.
@ R I don’t know what “ethical hacking” is. ???
I agree that it is illegal especially when it is used for theft of identity.
@dog,Yeah?!? But what is your opinion? Oh yeah…as long as it is someone like Anonymous stealing credit card info and security/sovereignty secrets to push a radical anarchist agenda its all good.
An ethical hacker used to work for me. Companies hire ethical hackers to try to break into their own systems and identify vulnerabilities.
That is a large part of what I do for a living actually. Penetration testing and vulnerability assessments make up a large part of my revenue stream.
There’s a difference though between professionals hired by clients and what are general called “ethical hackers” who “volunteer” their “services” supposedly for their victims’ benefit.
Not at all since it’s become malicious and a primarily criminal enterprise. Claims of “ethical hacking” is now nothing more than naive idea that it’s “cool but harmless”. It’s neither.
Tree Rat, see my comment above … I’m using a very specific definition of “ethical hacker”. I think you’re referring to hobbyists.
I would think that motive would enter into the discussion. I have no problem at all with say, someone at the NSA hacking into a belligerent nations systems to give us a heads up about an attack.
But in most other situations I would think that hacking would be at least unethical.
