In light of the Qatari numb nut episode and the fact that I don’t like DI as a rule I thought I’d float a poll. Keep in mind I believe it must apply to US diplomats too.
I don’t much care about anonymity here …. I voted “Absolutely a must”. I’ve never understood diplomatic immunity to tell you the truth. Are diplomats impaired in such a way that they have trouble following the law?
I’ll say this. AlJazeera offers up a very mild article regards the yound diplomat. here

And lets be fair and consider Elric position here. Although consular visits are a norm it is kinda screwy if a Qatari can have such an attitude given the situation. This “diplomat” is so unprofessional and/or serves as an example of Qatari short sightedness.

I don’t see a position. I think your inference is very generous or must be influenced by your actually knowing Elric and understanding his method of expression.
Now if instead of his usual “drop a link and a meaningless one-liner”, Elric had actually written “considering the sensitivity involved in visiting an imprisoned terrorist, you might think the diplomat would have been more low key and respectful to any American he encountered, on the plane or off”, then I would have completely agreed.
Alas, unlike you, I don’t speak fluent Elric-ese.

If I’m not mistaken that is actually a black bloc anarchist group that is hardly a collection of democrats,republicans and independents. Elric to my knowledge is not from the northeast and no I do not know him personally. Our history is also one of more clash than agreement.
As for me inferring stuff I confess I do that at times but that is more for me trying to understand possibilities in the static environment of a thread.Sometimes I hit a homer other times I live the whole a-s-s-u-m-e rule thing.
So in the end “fair” probably not the best word but my exploration is sound imo. I also offered up an AlJazeera link which if you put two and two together and allow some curiosity you almost have to say “HHmmm”
