“As Muslims we need to stand up and speak out about who we are. If we want to defy stereotypes we have to start defining ourselves and we’re not going to do that just by sitting quietly at home expecting people to just get it.”   Queen Rania of Jordan

Any thoughts ???

I lost the link which was reporting on her YouTube and national video series but yes you are right.
Even with the lost linkage though I thought the line fit well with the series I had. The series was most often visited by Islamophobes and was meant to be my contribution that out of a billion the majority is ok.
Many people Muslim and non Muslim have said all along that they (muslims) need to stand up and speak for themselves and not allow the nutters to do the defining. Thanks for stopping by.

I’d seen her speak and been a student escort about 4 years ago when she spoke at my college. She’s really an incredibly charismatic woman. However, based on the fact that there are over a billion muslims out there of many different ethnicities, cultures and ideologies, I don’t believe she had any expectations for Islam as a whole to change, more that it was an address to other leaders.

Islam is a religion that enforces traditions and has a certain amount of expectation for either religious law or for legal consideration of religion in government. In other words, a hard world for progressives.

What I believe she was essentially saying is they need to get rid of leaders who gain power by recalling the glory days of Islam and try to enforce and create societies that are somehow throwbacks to the 17th century. This is where most of our modern stereotypes about burkkhas, turbans and extremeism after all, come from.
